With historical roots dating back thousands of years in India, this head treatment is a form of the ancient healing system of Ayurveda that involves warm herb infused oils to improve the flow of your chakras.
In India, from birth through to old age, the tradition of massage has been passed down through the generations and is very much a part of everyday life. In the 1970s when the Indian physical therapist Narendra Mehta arrived to England, he was surprised to find that there was no such head massage therapy available and the traditional full-body massage completely neglected the head. Mehta devoted his time to learning the head therapy in order to introduce it to western society. By the 1980s, clients in England were reaping the benefits and the traditional Indian Head Massage became a trend.
EXPLORING THE MANY BENEFITS
Suffer from headaches? The combination of brisk friction movements that promote stimulation, along with kneading movements to soothe and relieve neck and scalp tension, make the Indie Head treatment an effective for headache sufferers. With regular treatments, the frequency and intensity of stress-related headaches can reduce significantly, as the massage releases tension and promotes relaxation.
Looking for that great healthy looking hair? When we’re stressed, the scalp can tense and tighten up, restricting blood flow to the area. Regular Indie Head Massage can help by stimulating the blood flow to the follicles to loosen the area, which in turn delivers the nourishing nutrients needed to encourage healthy hair growth and to promote strong and shiny hair.
If these benefits weren’t enough, the Indie Head treatment also promotes deep relaxation, relieves muscle stiffness, relieves tension, anxiety and stress, aids sleep, improves mood, and promotes a sense of health and general well-being.
EXPERIENCE THE TREATMENT
The traditional Indie Head massage only focuses on the head, however, the Spa at Langdon Hall has expanded this therapy to incorporate a full-body experience including body massage elements and reflexology.
The treatment begins while laying on your stomach as the therapist opens your senses by massaging essential oils onto the back. First the soothing scent of lavender promotes peaceful sleep and relaxation as the oil is dripped onto your back, followed by on guard (a blend of orange, clove, cinnamon, eucalyptus, and rosemary) used to support the immune system and protect the body from illness. The final oil, deep blue, is an invigorating blend that helps sooth sore joints and muscles. These oils are massaged down your spine with specific techniques to maximize their benefits.
TIP: Essential oils have many calming properties but only if you are not sensitive to strong fragrances. Let us know if you have sensitivities to strong smells prior to booking this treatment.
Before the featured head massage, peppermint and orange essential oils are used to provide a refreshing and invigorating foot massage with reflexology techniques to further enhance relaxation and healthy chakras. A welcomed addition that truly makes this full-body experience one-of-a-kind.
The continuous movements of the therapist flow up the body and onto the head as you begin to experience what the ancient healing practices of the India Head massage truly intended. Invigorating, yet relaxing, the scalp massage incorporates clawing and striking movements using the essential oils to heighten the senses. Tension and stress are relieved through friction and circular motions focusing on pressure points and stokes through the hair. The head massage slowly finishes with neck stretches and chakra holding to create peace.
TIP: The essential oils are massaged into your hair to nourish and hydrate. After the treatment, the oil can remain on the hair to continue the healing effects before shampooing at least twice to be removed.
The Indie Head treatment at Langdon Hall is a truly unique full-body experience. By combining multiple elements your body is whisked away to utopia while benefiting from the healing roots of ancient India for an overall wellness.
