Bachelder
Wines
Terroir: A French term used
to denote the special charateristics that geography,
geology, and climate of a certain place bestowed
on a particular crop. It is also referred to as
a sense of place. In Niagara we have coined "Somewhereness"
to try and define the concept.
When Thomas first mentioned his idea to showcase
the Terroir of Chardonnay internationally I thought
it was brilliant. He has made wine in all 3 regions,
each one well known for quality Chardonnay. He
came to Niagara to be the head winemaker at Le
Clos Jordanne. The focus at this winery was and
still is to produce top quality terroir driven
Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in Niagara.
We at Langdon have always believed in terroir
driven wines and the importance of focusing on
local quality ingredients.
We are proud to offer these wines individually
by the glass or try a flight of all three experience
the concept of Terroir
$16 per 6oz Glass or 3 2oz Glasses.
The Hills of Oregon
Thomas has worked for both Ponzi Vineyards and
Lemelson in Oregon, and it is from the latter
that he rents cellar space to make Bachelder.
Working with fruit from both the Sandstone and
Volcanic (Basaltic) strata that predominate in
Oregon, Bachelder is able to capture the fruit
and coax out the stunning minerality of Oregon
Chardonnay in all of its lacey purity.
The Niagara Escarpment
Canada’s fruit basket, the Niagara peninsula
has a unique microclimate due to the ocean-like
Great lakes that surround it. Dolomitic Limestone
abounds here - interspersed with clay - giving
the wines intense perfume; a rich mouthfeel and
a defining iron grip that speaks of the Escarpment
where the grapes are grown.
Burgundy – 'La Bourgogne'
The Côte d'Or (the 'Golden Hills') is a
long strand of hills stretching from Dijon to
Chalon is home to the region's 'sense-of-place'-defining
limestone. There Thomas workswith the best organic
vignerons to ensure that the grapes are grown
to exacting specifications, the vineyards stretching
from Nuits-St. Georges in the north, through Beaune
heading south to Puligny-Montrachet.
